The Catholic Laity Council of Nigeria has strongly condemned the killings in Benue State, calling on the federal government to act decisively to end what it describes as “the valley of blood” that has reopened in Nigeria. This was said in a statement by the Acting National President, Martins Braimah, and the National Secretary-General, Dame Chisara Egwim-Chima, on Wednesday.

The Council, said its alignment with the position of Pope Leo XIV and the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, who described Nigeria as “the valley of blood in Nigeria” and Benue State as its sacrificial ground, said the Pope’s statement captured “the urgency to address the ongoing atrocities and hold the government accountable for its actions or inactions.”

The group also issued a call to the Catholic faithful and all Nigerians to take action, stating, The CLCN recognizes that the lay faithful have a crucial role in this struggle. Echoing the words of Pope Leo XIII, who believed in the active participation of laity in societal matters, it urges all Catholics and Nigerians to rise up, advocate for peace, and work towards a society free from violence.
